PRESS RELEASE: Houston’s Puerto Rican & Cuban Festival Unites the Community to Assist Hurricane Maria Victims in Puerto Rico

PRESS RELEASE:  Houston’s Puerto Rican & Cuban Festival Unites the Community to Assist Hurricane Maria Victims in Puerto Rico

HOUSTON, Sept. 24, 2017 – On Wednesday, Hurricane Maria crashed across the entire U.S. territory of Puerto Rico, making landfall with winds over 150 mph. Widespread destruction from the worst storm to ever hit has left the entire island without power, and most without running water or cell phone service. Maria also brought heavy rains and flooding, and is responsible for at least 13 deaths in Puerto Rico.

The Puerto Rican and Cuban Festival (PRC Festival) production team will be coordinating a donation drive on September 30, 2017 from 9am to 3pm at four (4) select Fiesta stores in the Houston area. Volunteers from the PRC Festival will be accepting donations at Fiesta stores at 4711 Airline Dr, 1175 Edgebrook, 333 S. Mason Rd. and 8320 FM 1960. The needs are vast but we recommend donations of new or used chainsaws, generators, solar or battery powered lamps and fans, solar panels, batteries, flashlights, baby food and formula, diapers, bug repellant, cleaning supplies, water and canned goods. We will also accept monetary donations at the Fiesta locations or via a GoFund me account that has been established to support Puerto Rico at

In addition, there are organizations throughout the state coordinating their efforts with the PRC Festival. Donations are being accepted in Austin, Dallas, Galveston and Tyler, Texas. All donations will go directly to support people on the island that are in need as a result of Hurricane Maria. The donated items will be shipped to Puerto Rico via humanitarian flights and barges. Once they arrive on the island, they will be distributed via local non-profit organizations in Puerto Rico.

Houston Astros Legend, Jose “Cheo” Cruz will be available for Public Service Announcements related to the donation drive and the work being done to support Hurricane Maria victims.
